A True Original! Self-Assured Jazz/Pop Singer-Songwriter Five years ago, Megan Fanning (pr: Meegan) made her debut as a jazz singer with a CD called Wee Small Hours. She was profiled on CBC Radio's Coastal Grooves program and the feature prompted an unprecedented number of phone calls to the station from people dying to know who they'd just heard. People began showing up at record stores requesting her CD and before long, Fanning's name was appearing alongside the likes of Karin Plato and Kate Hammett Vaughan in discussions of Vancouver's impressive roster of female jazz vocalists. Today Fanning is a veteran performer with several jazz festivals under her belt and a regular gig at Monk McQueens. Though a relatively new face in the Vancouver jazz scene, Fanning has been playing music and singing all her life. As a child, she was part of the church choir. In the late 80's, she sang with Vancouver's Universal Gospel Choir and was a member of a garage band called Tools For Peace. Fanning took a lengthy break from music in the early 90's to be "soccer mom" to her children with husband and Celtic musician Tim Fanning. Then, in the late 90's she joined Vancouver's rock and soul revue band, The Dynamics, and also began devoting herself to her first love - jazz. She studied jazz vocals with the renowned Dee Daniels and began performing at Vancouver venues. Wee Small Hours was released in 1999 and earned Fanning immediate praise for her warm, emotive singing style. "One is struck first and foremost by that voice," wrote Paul Norton of CFRO's One O'clock Jump. "The lithe, pure tones of Megan Fanning can make you weep - or rejoice. Where has the woman been hiding?" Vancouver Jazz's Brian Nation called Fanning "a delightful new discovery" and added "I can't wait to hear more." The new CD, Influence, indeed features more of Fanning's acclaimed vocals, backed by a crème de la crème of Vancouver jazz musicians - including Juno award winners, Tom Keenlyside and Brad Turner, pianists Miles Black and Chris Gestrin, bassists Michael Guild and Tim Porter, and Bernie Arai on drums. It also marks her debut as a songwriter, but along the way, Fanning still offers up tasty covers. "a self assured singer with respect for tradition and an ear for crossover pop tunes"- Marke Andrews: Vancouver Sun
