The first Havana International Festival of Ballet was first staged in 1960 and has taken place 20 times since, making it one of the most well established events of its kind in the world. Acclaimed ballet troupes from 57 countries have mounted 217 productions at the Festival, with the Cubans contributing 630 shows. This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba with participation by its founder, artistic and technical director, Prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alfonso. Ballet Festival Venues
Gran Teatro - Established in 1837 making it the oldest continuous performing arts institution in Latin America. The original building was considered one of the finest theaters in the world. Over the years it was remodeled to its current state (completed in 1915). It is considered the most sumptuous building in Cuba and is home to the Ballet Nacional de Cuba.
National Theatre of Cuba - Begun in 1951 and completed in 1979. In addition to two performance stages, it houses recreational facilities and art galleries.
Teatro Mella - Formerly a fine cinema house. In 1961 it was converted into performance hall and became headquarters for three festivals: Havana International Ballet, the Gold Boleros, and Days of Dance. |

Alicia Alonso, Founder of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba
Alicia Alonso was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1920. She studied in Havana, then in New York with Vilzak and at the School of American Ballet, and later with Volkova in London. She joined the American Ballet Theatre in 1940 and danced with them until 1960. She was an intensely dramatic dancer as well as a pure technician. Her most famous role was Giselle, but she also created roles in Tudor's Undertow (1945), Balanchine's Theme and Variations (1947), de Mille's Fall River Legend (1948), and the title role in Alberto Alonso's Carmen (1967). She founded Ballet Alicia Alonso in Cuba in 1950. It changed its name to National Ballet of Cuba in 1960. She is Founder, Choreographer and Artistic Director of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba.

Day One – Hello Havana!
Arrive at Havana’s José Martí International Airport. There you will meet your Cuba Education Tour guide and professional bus chauffeur, taking you to the Hotel Telégrafo located near the Gran Teatro and Malecón seawall. Tonight attend the opening gala ceremonies for the 21st Havana International Festival of Ballet at the Gran Teatro |

Day Two – Ballet Day in Havana
Take a special tour of Havana’s National Museum of Dance, offering spaces for theoretical discussion of activities linked to dance. This afternoon, take a backstage visit to the Gran Teatro and its art gallery. Attend an evening ballet performance at the Gran Teatro, the National Theatre of Cuba or the Teatro Mella. |
Day Three – Cuban Arts and Culture Day
Attend an invitational tour of a one-time exhibit at the Palacio de Bellas Artes mounted for the 60th Anniversary of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. Next, tour important sites of Modern Havana such as the Capital building, Prado promenade, Revolution Square, among others. Enjoy a delicious lunch hosted by José Fuster, one of Cuba's most important ceramists and painters, at his whimsical studio in Jaimanita. |

Day Four – Getting to Know the Caribbean’s Largest Capital
A morning walking tour of Old Havana will visit four historic plazas that contain the largest collection of remaining colonial-era architecture. Next we’ll visit the Scale Model of Old Havana to learn about the history, plans for restoration and preservation of the community and its structures. Enjoy lunch at La Mina Restaurant feasting on traditional Cuban dishes and live music! In the afternoon, visit the National Library of Cuba to view a one-time exhibit related to the history of the National Ballet of Cuba and the Cuba School of Ballet. |
Day Five – Afro - Cuban Culture and Art
Take a morning Ferryboat ride across Havana Harbor to the Municipality of Regla. This Afro-Cuban community has a long, rich and still active tradition of African-inspired religions. Visit a unique church and their municipal museum to learn the origins and culture of this community from its curator Raiza Fornaguera. Your afternoon is free to explore the streets of the city. |
Day Six – Natural Cuba – Day Trip to Pinal Del Rio and Viñales Valley
Visit the Viñales Valley, home to the most interesting and varied geological formations in the Caribbean and the heart of tobacco cultivation on the island. Take a breathtaking boat tour through Cueva del Indio and explore the village at your leisure as well as visit magical mini-paradise, the Viñales Botanical Garden. This evening dance to native Jazz styles at Club La Zorra y El Cuervo featuring astounding performances by island bands and soloists! |

Day Seven – Dance Education and History in Havana
Visit an elementary ballet school in Havana, meeting teachers and students and learning about approaches to teaching grade school kids dance. Afterwards, attend a tour of the Museum of the Revolution, the former Presidential Palace. Your afternoon is yours to explore the city. |
Day Eight – Visit to the Cuban National School of Ballet
Visit the Cuban National Ballet School, the biggest ballet school in the world! We’ll tour the facility and learn about its methodology. The afternoon is free for exploring. |
Day Nine – Cigar Factory Tour and Free Time in Havana
Attend a morning tour of the Partagás Cigar Factory where you’ll witness the secrets of the cigar craft. The afternoon is free to explore the city with your tour mates and new Cuban friends

Day Ten – Ballet Festival Gala Closing Ceremonies
The morning and afternoon are free to explore the city. Farewell dinner at La Guarida, location for Oscar-nominated film "Strawberry and Chocolate," before attending the closing ceremonies of the 21st Biennial Havana International Festival of Ballet at the Gran Teatro. |
